Early bird!

Happy New Year!
So I am starting tomorrow... wow... I have to admit that I am a bit worried about this.
Tomorrow morning I will go to the Tallahassee Farmer's Market at 8 am so I can pick up my first batch of food and some breakfast. I have no food at home. I am happy to announce that I have found my first locavore buddy. A friend of mine is doing a cleanse and she has promised me that she'll join in once she's done with it. Good news for me!!!! I already feel better about this.

Starting Point

Honestly, I don't know where these ideas come from and I really don't know why I am doing this; but as they say... here goes nothing.
The idea to become a locavore came from a recent research paper I worked on for school (yes, I am a dork). A locavore, in case you didn't know, is someone who eats food grown or produced locally, in my case, within a radius of 100 miles (~160 km). The effort calls for supporting local farmers, eating better foods, and becoming more environmentally friendly. You can learn more at http://100milediet.org.
I have to say that I don't really know how this is going to work out. Starting date is Tuesday, January 5th. I know that sounds like a weird starting date but I won't be back home until Sunday evening and the farmer's market doesn't open until Monday afternoon... so Tuesday it is.
The 100-mile diet is simple. It's a living experiment in local eating that will reconnect me with food... "real food," local farmers, the seasons, and the landscape I live in. The inspiration... Alisa Smith and J.B. MacKinnon, authors of Plenty: Eating Locally on the 100-mile Diet.
I visited the 100-mile diet website and they recommend to start small... but I decided to just jump at this both feet in... so new year resolution is saying goodbye to eating out with friends, having a beer at the pub, popcorn at the movies... awwwww... this is already soundin
g pretty bad right?... well, the Chinese proverb says "The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step." And I don't even have to go that far; we keep going then.
The image to the right shows how far I can go to get food... 100
miles and no more. I'll keep you posted and hopefully you'll keep me motivated.
Wish me luck! Happy New Year 2010!
